Workshop on Transdisciplinary Education and Research for the Energy Mobility Nexus in Central Asia

SPCE Hub, along with the Technische Universität Berlin and the Intersectoral School of Governance, organised a workshop titled “Transdisciplinary Education and Research for the Energy Mobility Nexus in Central Asia.” This event brought together researchers and experts from Germany and Central Asia to discuss the need for capacity building in innovative education and research, focusing on the energy mobility nexus. The workshop aimed to design cutting-edge educational and research projects.

Day 1

The first day featured presentations from Dr. Kishimjan Osmonova and Dr. Sebastian Schiek (SPCE Hub), who outlined potential pathways for developing promising projects in transdisciplinary education and research related to energy mobility nexus and other fields. They were followed by insightful talks from Dr. Abylaikhan Soltanayev (Almaty University of Power Engineering, Kazakhstan) and Dr. Wulf-Holger Arndt (Center for Technology and Society at TU Berlin). Their discussions covered challenges and solutions concerning the energy mobility nexus in Central Asia and beyond. Dr. Thorsten Philipp then shared insights on the fundamental principles, formats, and methods of transdisciplinary education and how it can complement traditional disciplinary approaches.

Day 2

On the second day, Professor Dr. Monika Gonser (Intersectoral School of Governance BW) joined the workshop online and spoke about the challenges and opportunities in merging scientific and practical knowledge in transdisciplinary educational and research projects. Following her talk, additional contributions were made by Madina Abdullayeva (University of World Economy and Diplomacy, Tashkent, Uzbekistan), Dr. Serik Orazgaliyev (Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan), and Dr. Elbek Khodjaniyazov (Urgench State University, Uzbekistan). They highlighted successes, prospects, and challenges in implementing innovative teaching methods and updating curricula in higher education institutions within Central Asia.

Outlook

Overall, the workshop proved to be a valuable experience, demonstrating a strong commitment to collaboration between European and Central Asian participants in joint learning and capacity building for sustainable development. There was significant interest in establishing ongoing partnerships, with attendees eager to form a consortium to further advance the ideas and connections made during the workshop.
